Frankie walked with his hands jammed deep into his pockets, kicking a rock as he went along, all the way to the tower that held the owlery. Abandoning his rock, he slowly began his ascent, occasionally glancing out the window to see how high up he was. Sometimes he wondered what would happen if he jumped out. Not in a suicide-y way, just curious. Like how far could he fall and still be okay? It was weird to think about. He wondered if some people would even care if he went over.
Reaching the top of the tower, he walked across the room full of owls, smiling at the sight of the Longbottom family owl waiting for him. He had his own owl, Rory, but he'd sent that bird off with an order for a new book in Hogsmeade. This bird had brought him and his siblings' post at breakfast, and hadn't left just yet. He pulled the note he'd scribbled out to his mum and read it silently, biting his lip.
Telling her today. Have hot chocolate ready when me and dad come to visit this weekend, yeah?
Frankie sighed, shaking his head as he sealed the paper in an envelope. His mum was really the only oen that sort of knew about his feelings for Rose. She'd know exactly what he meant. Addressing the letter, just in case, he tied it hurriedly to the owl's leg and gave it a treat before carrying it to the window. "Off you go. My sanity depends on it, mate." The bird looked at him, as if he almost understood, before turning and flying off out the window.
Once the bird was out of his sight, just a microscopic black dot against the grey sky, Frankie turned and started back down the tower. As he reached the courtyard, he tightened his scarf around his neck, smiling brightly when he saw Rose walking across, parallel to him. He fixed his hair quickly before running to catch up with her. "Oi! Rosie, wait up!"
